while standing, sitting, and lying on your sides.” 1 He also concluded the Friday prayer with it in His words: “When the prayer has concluded, disperse throughout the land, seek Allah’s bounty, and remember Allah often, so that you may succeed.” 2 Hence, remembrance is also the conclusion of life in this world: if it is the servant’s final utterance, Allah will admit him into Paradise.
— As for those who remember Allah being singled out to benefit from His signs—and they are people of understanding and intellect—it is exemplified by the words of the Exalted: “Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day are signs for people of understanding—those who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides.” 3
— As for remembrance accompanying and being joined to every righteous deed, and being its very spirit, Allah, Glorified is He, joined it to prayer, as in His words: “Establish prayer for My remembrance.” 4 He also joined it to fasting and to Hajj and its rites. Indeed, remembrance is the spirit, essence, and purpose of Hajj, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Circumambulation of the House, walking between al-Safā and al-Marwa, and stoning the pillars were prescribed only to establish the remembrance of Allah.” He also joined it to jihad and commanded that He be remembered when confronting adversaries and engaging the enemy. The Exalted said: “O you who believe, when you encounter an enemy force, stand firm and remember Allah often, so that you may succeed.” 5
These, then, are ten respects in which remembrance occurs in the Noble Quran, and for each of them were cited
