this reasoning and its invalidity. Among those answers are the following:

Allah’s religion is perfect and complete, with no deficiency in it. Allah says, “Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and chosen Islam as your religion.”1 Whatever was not part of the religion in the time of our Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and his Companions is not part of the religion today, nor will it ever become so before the Hour comes. Allah, Glorious and Exalted, accepts nothing as religion except what is established by His Book and the Sunnah of His Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Tales, dreams, stories, and reports are not sources upon which sacred law may be established or religion founded. Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyya—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “According to the scholars of Islam, the sources to be followed in establishing rulings are the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and the way of the earliest forerunners. Under no circumstances may a religious ruling be established without these three sources, whether by an explicit text or through deduction.”2

No unambiguous verse or authoritative Sunnah has prescribed deliberately seeking to supplicate at graves, nor has any sound report permitting it been transmitted from the three favored generations praised by the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—when he said: “The best of my nation is the generation among whom I was sent, then those who follow them, and then those who follow them.”3 Nor has anything of the kind been transmitted from any recognized imam or authoritative scholar.

Furthermore, many of the tales and dreams related in this regard cannot be authentically attributed to those from whom they are reported. They are merely fabricated sayings, lies, and forgeries—especially those attributed to certain people of knowledge and virtue. Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyya—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “This, praise be to Allah, has not been transmitted from any recognized imam or any scholar
