Fiqh al-Adiyah wa-al-AdhkarAbd al-Razzaq ibn Abd al-Muhsin al-Badr

There can be no doubt that stories and tales have a profound effect on the hearts of the common people and the ignorant. They have led many of them into all manner of misguidance and falsehood. The Muslim servant of Allah must not base his religion on any such thing, for it carries no weight, cannot be relied upon, and constitutes no proof. Proof lies only in the Book of Allah Most High and the Sunnah of His Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—not in fabricated tales, concocted stories, and falsified reports.

While discussing some of the factors that caused certain people to become captivated by graves and attached to them—even though their occupants are dead and possess no power to harm or benefit them, nor to cause death, give life, or resurrect—the eminent scholar Imam Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

“One of them [that is, the factors that led to this] is the tales related to them about those graves: that one person sought aid from a certain grave while in dire straits and was delivered from them; that another called upon its occupant, or supplicated through him, regarding a need and it was fulfilled for him; and that when harm befell another, he placed his hope in the occupant of that grave, who then removed his affliction. Shrine custodians and devotees of graves possess so many such stories that recounting them would take a long time. They are among the most mendacious of Allah’s creation in what they relate about the living and the dead…”—to the end of his words, may Allah have mercy on him.1

This unsound claim and invalid reasoning could never have gained acceptance among anyone who professes Islam and adheres to this upright religion were it not for the prevalence of ignorance and the scarcity of knowledge concerning the true nature of that with which Allah sent His Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and indeed all the messengers: establishing pure monotheism and severing the causes and avenues of polytheism.

Scholars have given many answers and numerous lines of refutation demonstrating the frailty of
