for Allah, and supplicate Allah Most High through them; perhaps Allah will grant you relief.’

One of them said, ‘O Allah, I had two elderly parents, a wife, and young children for whom I tended livestock. When I brought the herd home in the evening, I would milk the animals and begin with my parents, giving them milk before my children. One day, I had to go far afield to find grazing among the trees and did not return until evening. I found that my parents had fallen asleep. I milked as usual, brought the milk, and stood by their heads. I disliked waking them from their sleep, yet I also disliked giving the children milk before them. The children were crying at my feet, and I remained thus, as did they, until dawn broke. If You know that I did this seeking Your Face, then make an opening in the rock for us through which we may see the sky.’ Allah made an opening in it, and they could see the sky through it.

The second said, ‘O Allah, I had a female cousin whom I loved as intensely as any man could love a woman. I asked her to yield herself to me, but she refused unless I brought her one hundred dinars. I labored until I had gathered one hundred dinars and then brought them to her. When I had positioned myself between her legs, she said, “O servant of Allah, fear Allah and do not break the seal except lawfully.” So I got up and left her. If You know that I did this seeking Your Face, then make an opening in the rock for us.’ So He widened the opening for them.

The third said, ‘O Allah, I once hired a laborer for a measure of rice. When he had completed his work, he said, “Give me my due.” I offered him his measure of rice, but he declined it. I continued cultivating it until, through it, I amassed cattle and the herdsmen who tended them. He later came to me and said, “Fear Allah and do not deprive me of my due.” I said, “Go to those cattle and their herdsmen and take them.” He said, “Fear Allah and do not mock me.” I replied, “I am not mocking you. Take those cattle and their herdsmen.” He took them and went away with them. If You know that I did this seeking
