67 — Concise, Comprehensive Speech and Transmitted Supplications
Our discussion continues concerning the virtue of the Prophetic remembrances and transmitted supplications with which the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—would supplicate and which he taught his Companions. They are perfect in wording and meaning and encompass every form of good, from beginning to end. As the Mother of the Believers, Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her—said: “The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—favored comprehensive supplications and left aside all others.” This was narrated by Abū Dāwūd in his Sunan, Imam Ahmad in his Musnad, and Ibn Hibbān in his Sahīh.1
Al-Firyābī and others also narrated from Aisha that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said to her: “O Aisha, adhere to comprehensive supplication: O Allah, I ask You for every good, immediate and deferred, that which I know and that which I do not know. I seek refuge in You from every evil, immediate and deferred, that which I know and that which I do not know. O Allah, I ask You for the good that Muhammad, Your servant and Prophet, asked You for, and I seek refuge in You from the evil from which Your servant and Prophet sought refuge. O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and for every word and deed that draws one near to it. I seek refuge in You from the Fire and from every word and deed that draws one near to it. And I ask You to make the outcome of whatever You have decreed for me one of right guidance.”2
It was also recorded by Imam Ahmad, Ibn Mājah, and Ibn Hibbān in his Sahīh,
1 Sunan Abī Dāwūd (no. 1482), al-Musnad (6/148, 189), and Sahīh Ibn Hibbān (no. 867). It is also found in Sahīh Abī Dāwūd (no. 1315).
