60 — Allah Almighty’s Response to Those Who Supplicate

Our discussion continues concerning the standing of supplication, its virtue, and its lofty rank with Allah—Mighty and Majestic. One of the great virtues of supplication is that Allah—Mighty and Majestic—has promised those who call upon Him that He will answer their prayers, fulfill their hopes, and grant their requests. Allah Most High says: “Your Lord has said, ‘Call upon Me, and I will answer you. Indeed, those who are too proud to worship Me will enter Hell in utter humiliation.’” 1 This is part of His grace and generosity: He has urged His servants to supplicate Him and guaranteed them an answer, and He loves for them to call upon Him and ask of Him abundantly. Sufyān al-Thawrī—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “O You whose most beloved servants are those who ask You and ask You abundantly! O You whose most detested servants are those who do not ask You! No one besides You is like this, my Lord.” This was narrated by Ibn Abī Hātim and others2.

Many hadiths are authentically reported from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—encouraging supplication and explaining that Allah—Blessed is He—grants those who ask, answers those who call upon Him, and never disappoints the hopes of the believers. He—Glorified is He—is Modest and Generous: far too generous to turn away anyone who calls upon Him, disappoint anyone who communes privately with Him, or withhold from anyone who asks Him.

Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and others narrated, through a chain of transmission that al-Hāfiz graded good in al-Fath, from Salmān al-Fārisī—may Allah be pleased with him—that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Indeed, Allah is Modest
