Fiqh al-Adiyah wa-al-AdhkarAbd al-Razzaq ibn Abd al-Muhsin al-Badr

to physical acts of worship, such as prayer and fasting.1 The absolute best, however, is that which most closely conforms, inwardly and outwardly, to the state of the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—for the best speech is the speech of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him.”2 Thus end his words, may Allah have mercy on him.

As you can see, this contains a meticulous analysis and a comprehensive foundation for this important subject for anyone who seeks what is best and most perfect in worship and in deeds that draw one closer to Allah, Glorified and Exalted. Its essence is that the best course at every time and in every circumstance is to observe the sunnah of the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—as it pertains to that particular time and circumstance, and to occupy oneself with the duty, proper task, and requirements of that moment. By doing so, a Muslim attains perfection and achieves what is best and most complete.

It should nevertheless be known that deeds belonging to the same category differ in merit according to what is present in people’s hearts of faith in Allah, love for Him, reverence for His law, and the intention to seek His Countenance through the deed. The degrees by which they differ can neither be enumerated nor fully comprehended by anyone but Allah.

We therefore ask Him, Glorified is He, to guide us and you to the best of deeds—for none guides to the best of them but He—and to grant us all sincerity in word and deed.

(1) One noteworthy account in this regard is related by al-Dhahabī in *Siyar A‘lām al-Nubalā’* (8/114), in his biography of Imam Mālik ibn Anas. The devout ascetic Abdullah ibn Umar al-Umarī wrote to Imam Mālik, urging him to withdraw into seclusion and devote himself to worship. Mālik ibn Anas replied: “Allah has apportioned deeds just as He has apportioned sustenance. One man may be granted success in prayer but not in fasting, while another may be granted success in jihad. Disseminating knowledge is among the greatest acts of righteousness. I am content with that in which I have been granted success, and I do not consider what I am doing inferior to what you are doing. I hope that both of us are upon goodness and righteousness.” (2) *Majmū al-Fatāwā* (10/427–429).
