Noah denied. They rejected Our servant and said, ‘A madman!’ and he was rebuffed. So he called upon his Lord, ‘I am overpowered, so grant me victory!’ We then opened the gates of heaven with pouring rain and caused the earth to burst forth with springs, so the waters met for a matter already decreed. We carried him upon a vessel of planks and nails, sailing under Our watchful care, as a reward for the one who had been rejected.” 1
He, Glorified is He, also mentioned the supplication of His Prophet Job, peace be upon him, when affliction touched him. He said: “And Job, when he called upon his Lord, ‘Affliction has indeed touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.’ So We answered him, removed the affliction that was upon him, and restored his family to him along with an equal number besides, as a mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers.” 2
He also mentioned the supplication of His Prophet Jonah, peace be upon him, when the great fish swallowed him. He called upon his Lord from inside the fish, in the depths of the sea, and Allah answered his supplication. He, Glorified is He, said: “And the Man of the Fish, when he departed in anger and thought that We would not constrain him. Then he called out amid layers of darkness, ‘There is no deity except You. Glory be to You! Indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers.’ So We answered him, delivered him from distress, and thus do We deliver the believers.” 3
Thus, anyone who reflects upon the Noble Quran will find in it a great many supplications of the prophets: their entreaties to their Lord and their humble submission before Him in all their circumstances—may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon them.
And just as He, Glorified is He, described the prophets as devoted to supplication, characterized them by it, and praised them
