Ibn Jarīr—may Allah have mercy on him—said in his commentary on the words of Allah Most High, “And magnify Him with a mighty magnification”1: “He is saying: O Muhammad, magnify your Lord through the words and deeds by which He has commanded you to magnify Him, and obey Him in whatever He commands you to do and forbids you from doing.”2
Shaykh Muhammad al-Amīn al-Shinqītī—may Allah have mercy on him—said in his commentary on the same verse: “That is, magnify Him immensely. Magnification of Allah is manifested in the utmost care to obey His commands, avoid His prohibitions, and hasten to everything that pleases Him.”3
This indicates that the whole religion may be regarded as a detailed expression of the words “Allah is greater.” The Muslim performs every act of obedience and every form of worship to proclaim Allah’s greatness, magnify His majesty, and fulfil what is due to Him—Glorified is He. This further demonstrates the greatness of these words and their exalted rank. It is therefore related that Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—said: “For a servant to say, ‘Allah is greater,’ is better than this world and everything in it.”4 Allah is greater—immeasurably great; abundant praise belongs to Allah; and glory be to Allah morning and evening.
