the blessings from Allah found in his body—his hearing, sight, hands, feet, and so forth. Every one of these contains a blessing from Allah. The servant is duty-bound to use the blessings in his body for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in obedience to Him. Among Allah’s great blessings upon His servant is the sound health He enables him to enjoy in his hearing, sight, and entire body. How many blessings Allah has placed within His servant—even in a single vein at rest! Well-being is a blessing that demands gratitude and merits praise. Abd al-A‘lā al-Taymī used to say: “Frequently ask Allah, Mighty and Majestic, for well-being. A person suffering affliction, however severe his affliction may be, has no greater need to pray than one enjoying well-being, for the latter is never secure from affliction. Those afflicted today are none other than those who enjoyed well-being yesterday, and those who will be afflicted after today are none other than those enjoying well-being today. Even if affliction were to lead to good, we would not be equal to bearing it. Many an affliction wears a person down in this world and disgraces him in the Hereafter. One who persists for a long time in disobedience to Allah, Majestic and Mighty, cannot feel secure against an affliction remaining for him in the rest of his life that will wear him down in this world and disgrace him in the Hereafter.” He would then say: “Praise be to Allah: if we count His blessings, we cannot enumerate them; if we labor tirelessly in His service, we cannot repay them; and however long we live amid them, we cannot wear them out.”2.

Indeed, even if the servant were granted the entire lifespan of the world and spent that life wholly absorbed in
