and messengerhood and direct speech with gratitude. The Most High said: “O Moses, I have chosen you above all people by My messages and by speaking to you. So hold firmly to what I have given you and be among the grateful.” 1 Many verses convey this meaning, describing the prophets’ gratitude to Allah and showing that this was their way and path. 2
As for the gratitude of the Seal of the Prophets and master of all the children of Adam, Muhammad ibn Abd Allah—may the finest blessings and purest peace be upon him—it is a vast subject and a boundless ocean. He knew Allah better than all creation, feared Him most faithfully, was the most grateful for His blessings, and held the highest rank with Him. It is established in the Sahih that al-Mughīra ibn Shuba—may Allah be pleased with him—said: “The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—stood in prayer until his feet became swollen. He was asked, ‘Why do you do this when Allah has forgiven your past and future sins?’ He replied, ‘Should I not be a grateful servant?’” 3
May Allah, His angels, His prophets and messengers, and all the believers bestow blessings upon him, for he proclaimed Allah’s oneness, made Him known, called people to Him, and rendered Him gratitude in the fullest measure. And may Allah grant him abundant peace.
