so let the servant choose whichever of the two is more pleasing to him and more fitting for him. One who remembers Allah brings happiness to his companion, unlike the heedless idler, whose companion is made wretched and harmed by him.1
Gatherings of remembrance safeguard the servant from sorrow and regret on the Day of Resurrection. By contrast, gatherings of amusement and heedlessness will be a source of sorrow and regret on the Day of Resurrection for those who attend them. Abū Dāwūd narrated with a sound chain of transmission from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Whoever sits in a place without remembering Allah Most High there will incur loss from Allah Most High; and whoever lies down in a place without remembering Allah there will incur loss from Allah Most High.”2 That is, deficiency, liability, and regret.
Part of the honor of gatherings of remembrance and their lofty standing with Allah is that Allah—Glorious and Majestic—boasts of those who remember Him before His angels. Muslim narrated in his Sahih from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said: Muʿāwiya came upon a circle of people in the mosque and asked, “What has brought you together?” They replied, “We have gathered to remember Allah Most High.” He asked, “By Allah, is that the only reason you have gathered?” They replied, “By Allah, that is the only reason we have gathered.” He said, “I did not ask you to swear because I suspected you. No one who enjoyed a standing with the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—comparable to mine narrated fewer hadiths from him than I did. The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—once came upon a circle of his Companions and asked, ‘What has brought you together?’ They replied, ‘We have gathered to remember Allah Most High and praise Him for guiding us to Islam and graciously bestowing this blessing upon us.’ He asked, ‘By Allah, is that the only reason you have gathered?’ They replied, ‘By Allah, that is the only reason we have gathered.’ He said, ‘I did not ask you to swear because I suspected you. Rather, Gabriel came to me and informed me that Allah—Blessed and Exalted—boasts of you before the angels.’”3.
