except one in which Allah Most High is remembered. This is stated in the two Sahih collections in the hadith of Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—who reported that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
“Allah has additional angels who roam the roads seeking out those who engage in remembrance. When they find people remembering Allah Most High, they call to one another: ‘Come to what you are seeking!’ They then encircle them with their wings, extending up to the lowest heaven. Their Lord Most High asks them—though He knows them best: ‘What are My servants saying?’ They reply: ‘They declare You free of all imperfection, proclaim Your greatness, praise You, and glorify You.’ He asks: ‘Have they seen Me?’ They reply: ‘No, by Allah, they have not seen You.’ He asks: ‘How would they be if they had seen Me?’ They reply: ‘Had they seen You, they would be even more earnest in worshipping You, more fervent in praising and glorifying You, and would declare You free of imperfection even more.’ He asks: ‘What do they ask of Me?’ They reply: ‘They ask You for Paradise.’ He asks: ‘Have they seen it?’ They reply: ‘No, by Allah, our Lord, they have not seen it.’ He asks: ‘How would they be if they had seen it?’ They reply: ‘Had they seen it, they would be even keener to attain it, more ardent in seeking it, and would desire it all the more.’ He asks: ‘From what do they seek refuge?’ They reply: ‘From the Fire.’ He asks: ‘Have they seen it?’ They reply: ‘No, by Allah, our Lord, they have not seen it.’ He asks: ‘How would they be if they had seen it?’ They reply: ‘Had they seen it, they would flee from it all the more and fear it even more intensely.’ He then says: ‘I call you to witness that I have forgiven them.’ One of the angels says: ‘So-and-so is among them, though he is not one of them; he came only for some need.’ He says: ‘Such are these companions that no one who sits with them will be wretched.’”1
Thus, gatherings of remembrance are gatherings of the angels, while gatherings of idle talk and heedlessness are gatherings of the devils. Each is joined to its own kind, and every person gravitates toward what suits him,
