That is, whenever the servant praises Allah, this is another new blessing that calls for further praise.
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā said that Mahmūd al-Warrāq recited these verses to him:
“If my gratitude for Allah’s blessing is itself a blessing from Him,
then I owe Him gratitude for that likewise.
How can gratitude arise except by His grace,
however long the days and life may last?
If I am touched by prosperity, its joy spreads far and wide;
if I am touched by adversity, reward follows in its wake.
Neither is ever without a gracious favor
too vast for mind, land, or sea to encompass.”1
Another poet expressed the same meaning:
“If every limb of mine possessed a tongue
to praise You for the good You have bestowed,
then the very increase in gratitude gained by thanking You thus
would testify still more fully to Your kindness and favors.”2
O Allah, all praise is Yours in gratitude, while all favor comes from You by grace. All praise is Yours for Islam; all praise is Yours for faith; all praise is Yours for the Quran; and all praise is Yours for family, wealth, and well-being. All praise is Yours for every blessing You have bestowed upon us, whether long ago or recently, secretly or openly, particularly or generally. Abundant praise is Yours for all of that. O Allah, all praise is Yours until You are pleased, and all praise is Yours, our Lord, when You are pleased.
