45/ Praising Allah for His Blessings and Favors

It was noted earlier that praise of Allah, Glorified is He, is all-encompassing and extends to everything He grants by way of kindness, blessing, and the like, and that His beautiful names, sublime attributes, and praiseworthy acts all necessitate praise of Him. This makes clear that praise of Allah is of two kinds: praise for His kindness toward His servants, which is a form of gratitude; and praise for the perfect attributes and majestic qualities that He intrinsically deserves—Glorified is He.

Most of the preceding discussion concerned praising Allah for His beautiful names and magnificent attributes, and how the servant’s sound knowledge of them is among the greatest causes enabling him to praise Allah in the finest and most complete manner. The discussion here, however, will concern the second kind of praise: praising Allah for His blessings and favors.

Allah Most High says: “O humanity! Remember Allah’s blessing upon you. Is there any creator other than Allah who provides for you from heaven and earth? There is no deity worthy of worship except Him. How, then, can you be turned away?” 1

He Most High also says: “Do you not see that Allah has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and has lavished His blessings upon you, both outward and inward?” 2

He Most High also says: “Whatever blessing you have is from Allah.” 3

And He Most High says: “If you tried to count Allah’s blessings, you could never enumerate them.” 4

Allah’s blessings upon His servants are numerous and varied, and every blessing calls for praise of the Bestower—Glorified is He,
