Fiqh al-Adiyah wa-al-AdhkarAbd al-Razzaq ibn Abd al-Muhsin al-Badr

peace and blessings: “That is Allah’s bounty, which He bestows upon whomever He wills.”

In the hadith of Abdullah ibn Busr—may Allah be pleased with him—reported by al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah, al-Hākim, and others, he said: A Bedouin came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, the teachings and ordinances of Islam have become numerous for me, so tell me of one comprehensive practice that will suffice me.” He said, “Devote yourself to the remembrance of Allah Most High.” The man asked, “Will that suffice me, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Yes, and it will be more than sufficient for you.”1

Thus, the sincere adviser—peace and blessings be upon him—directed him to something that would assist him in observing the ordinances of Islam, diligently adhering to them, and increasing in them. When a person makes the remembrance of Allah Most High his constant practice, he loves Him and loves what He loves. Nothing is then dearer to him than drawing close to Allah by observing the ordinances of Islam. The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—therefore directed him to that by which he could fulfill those ordinances and by which they would become easy for him.

Remembrance is indeed one of the greatest aids to obeying Allah: it makes obedience beloved to the servant, facilitates it for him, and makes it delightful, so that he does not experience the strain, hardship, and burden felt by the heedless. It also makes difficulties easy, facilitates what is arduous, and alleviates hardships. Allah is never remembered amid something difficult without it becoming easy, nor amid something arduous without it becoming manageable, nor amid hardship without it being alleviated, nor amid distress without it passing, nor amid anguish without relief coming. The remembrance of Allah is therefore relief after distress, ease after hardship, and joy after sorrow.

O Allah, You alone we ask, and by Your names and attributes we beseech You to make us among Your servants who remember You, and by Your mercy to protect us from the path of those who turn away in heedlessness. You are truly capable of all things.
