42 / Evidence from the Sunnah concerning the virtue of praise

Just as the Noble Quran has demonstrated the virtue and immense importance of praise through many kinds of evidence—some of which have already been mentioned—the Sunnah is likewise replete with evidence of the virtue and immense importance of praise, and of the benefits, fruits, and merits that result from it in this world and the Hereafter.

Our Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—is the bearer of the Banner of Praise. This is a tremendous distinction and a lofty rank granted to him. Imam Ahmad, al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Mājah narrated with an authentic chain of transmission from Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī—may Allah be pleased with him—that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “I am the master of the children of Adam on the Day of Resurrection—and this is no boast. The Banner of Praise will be in my hand—and this is no boast. Every prophet on that Day—Adam and all others—will be beneath my banner. I will be the first intercessor and the first whose intercession is accepted—and this is no boast.” 1.

Because he—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—praised Allah more than any other created being and fulfilled the duty of praising Him more perfectly than anyone else, he was given the Banner of Praise, so that all who praise Allah from the first and later generations may rally beneath it. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—referred to this when he said in the hadith: “Every prophet on that Day—Adam and all others—will be beneath my banner.”

It is a real banner that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—will carry in his hand on the Day of Resurrection. Beneath it will gather and unite all those from the first and later generations who constantly praise Allah. Those closest to his banner will be those who praise and remember Allah most and who most faithfully carry out His command. His community—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—is the best of all communities. They are those who constantly praise Allah in times of ease and hardship. It has been narrated in a hadith that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “The first to be summoned to Paradise will be those who constantly praise Allah—those who praise Allah in times of ease
