41 / The Virtue of Praising Allah and the Evidence for It from the Noble Quran

Previously, I discussed the virtue of the declaration of monotheism, “There is no god worthy of worship except Allah,” and the virtue of glorifying Allah. Both are among the four statements that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, described as the words most beloved to Allah. I also addressed a number of important matters concerning these two tremendous statements. I now begin discussing praise—praising Allah, Mighty and Majestic—for it is of tremendous importance and great merit; its reward with Allah is immense, and its rank with Him is lofty.

He, Glorified be He, opened His Book, the Noble Quran, with praise, saying: “All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all worlds, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful, Master of the Day of Judgment.” He also opened several of its surahs with praise. At the beginning of al-Anʿām, He says: “All praise is due to Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and made darkness and light; yet those who disbelieve set up equals with their Lord.” At the beginning of al-Kahf, He says: “All praise is due to Allah, who sent down the Book to His servant and placed no crookedness in it.” At the beginning of Sabaʾ, He says: “All praise is due to Allah, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth. To Him belongs all praise in the Hereafter, and He is the All-Wise, the All-Aware.” At the beginning of Fātir, He says: “All praise is due to Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, who appointed the angels as messengers with wings—two, three, or four. He adds to creation whatever He wills. Allah has power over all things.”

He began creation with praise, saying: “All praise is due to Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and made darkness and light.” 1 He also brought it to its conclusion with praise, saying, after mentioning the final abode of the people of Paradise and the people of the Fire: “You will see the angels surrounding the Throne, glorifying with the praise of
