some pebbles, which glorified Allah in his hand. Abū Bakr, Umar, Uthmān, and Alī were among us, and everyone in the gathering heard their glorification. The Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, then handed them to Abū Bakr, and they glorified Allah while with him; everyone in the gathering heard their glorification. He then handed them back to the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, and they glorified Allah in his hand. The Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, then handed them to Umar, and they glorified Allah in his hand; everyone in the gathering heard their glorification. There is no doubt that the glorification of Allah by small pebbles and food is more wondrous and more compelling than the glorification of Allah by mountains. Thus, the miracle granted to our Prophet Muhammad, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, in this regard is greater than the miracle granted to Allah’s Prophet David, peace be upon him, when the mountains glorified Allah along with him.
The hadith master Ibn Kathīr, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “As for the birds’ glorification of Allah along with David, peace be upon him, the glorification of Allah by solid mountains is even more wondrous. It was stated earlier in the hadith that pebbles glorified Allah in the palm of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him. Ibn Hāmid said, ‘This is a well-known and widely reported hadith.’ Stones, trees, and clods of dried clay would also greet him with peace, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him.
“In Sahīh al-Bukhārī, Ibn Masūd said, ‘We could indeed hear the food glorifying Allah as it was being eaten’—meaning that this occurred in the hand of the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him. The foreleg of the poisoned sheep spoke to him and informed him of the poison it contained. Tame and wild animals, as well as inanimate objects, also testified to his prophethood, as all of this has been set out in detail above. There is no doubt that glorification issuing from small, solid pebbles containing no cavities is more wondrous than
