all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth—the King, the Most Holy, the Almighty, the All-Wise.” 1 At the beginning of Surah al-Taghābun, He says: “Allah is glorified by all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth. His is the dominion, and to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over all things.” 2 At the beginning of Surah al-Aʿlā, He says: “Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High, who created and fashioned, who ordained and guided, and who brought forth the pasture, then reduced it to darkened stubble.” 3
Some scholars4 have said: Glorification occurs in the Quran in some thirty contexts: six pertain to the angels, nine to our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, four to other prophets, three to animals and inanimate objects, three specifically to the believers, and six to all existing beings.
Among those pertaining to the angels are the words of Allah, Exalted is He: “Those who bear the Throne and those around it glorify their Lord with praise, believe in Him, and seek forgiveness for those who believe”—to the end of the verse—5; and His words: “But if they are too proud, those who are with your Lord glorify Him by night and day, and they never grow weary.” 6 He also says: “To Him belongs whoever is in the heavens and on the earth. Those who are in His presence are not too proud to worship Him, nor do they tire. They glorify Him by night and day without flagging.” 7 And He says: “Indeed, we are those arrayed in ranks, and indeed, we are those who glorify.” 8
