3/ Further Benefits of Remembrance

We continue our discussion by enumerating some of the benefits of remembrance and mentioning some of the good it brings those who remember Allah, both in this world and the Hereafter. We shall do so on the basis of what the eminent scholar Imam Ibn al-Qayyim—may Allah have mercy on him—mentioned in his book al-Wābil al-Sayyib1.

— One of its benefits is that remembrance causes the Lord, Glorious and Exalted, to affirm His servant’s truthfulness. The one who remembers Allah speaks of Him by describing His perfect attributes and majestic qualities. When the servant does so, his Lord declares him truthful. Anyone whom Allah Most High declares truthful will not be resurrected among the liars, and it may be hoped that he will be resurrected among the truthful.

Ibn Mājah, al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Hibbān, al-Hākim, and others narrated from Abu Ishāq, from al-Agharr Abu Muslim, who testified that Abu Hurayrah and Abu Saīd al-Khudrī—may Allah be pleased with them both—testified that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“When the servant says, ‘There is no deity except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest,’ Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says, ‘My servant has spoken the truth: there is no deity except Me, and I am the Greatest.’ When he says, ‘There is no deity except Allah alone,’ He says, ‘My servant has spoken the truth: there is no deity except Me alone.’ When he says, ‘There is no deity except Allah, with no partner,’ He says, ‘My servant has spoken the truth: there is no deity except Me, and I have no partner.’ When he says, ‘There is no deity except Allah; to Him belong all sovereignty and all praise,’ He says, ‘My servant has spoken the truth: there is no deity except Me; to Me belong all sovereignty and all praise.’ When he says, ‘There is no deity except Allah, and there is no might or power except through Allah,’ He says, ‘My servant has spoken the truth: there is no deity except Me, and there is no might or power except through Me.’”

Then al-Agharr said something that I did not understand. I asked Abu Jafar, “What did he say?” He replied:
