— Another benefit of remembrance is that it will be a light for the one who remembers Allah in this world, a light for him in his grave, and a light for him at his resurrection, proceeding before him upon the Sirāt Bridge. Nothing illuminates hearts and graves like the remembrance of Allah Most High.
Allah Most High says: “Is one who was dead and whom We brought to life, giving him a light by which he walks among people, like one who remains in darkness from which he can never emerge?” 1.
The former is the believer, illuminated through faith in Allah, love for Him, knowledge of Him, and remembrance of Him.
The latter is one who is heedless of Allah Most High and turns away from remembering and loving Him.
All that truly matters and all true success lie in the light, while utter wretchedness lies in being deprived of it. For this reason, the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—frequently asked Allah—Mighty and Majestic—for this light: that He place it in every part of his outward and inward being, surround him with it from every direction, and make his very essence and entire being light.
Muslim narrated in his Sahih, from Abdullah ibn Abbas—may Allah be pleased with them both—concerning the Prophet’s supplication at night: “Among his supplications was: ‘O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my sight, light in my hearing, light to my right, light to my left, light above me, light beneath me, light before me, and light behind me, and grant me abundant light.’” Kuraib—one of the hadith’s narrators—said: “There were seven more stored in the heart.” It is then related: “I met one of al-Abbas’s descendants, who recounted them to me. He mentioned my sinews, my flesh, my blood, my hair, and my skin, and he mentioned two other things2.”
