Fiqh al-Adiyah wa-al-AdhkarAbd al-Razzaq ibn Abd al-Muhsin al-Badr

Abū Ishāq al-Sabī'ī narrated from 'Amr ibn Maymūn, who said: “People have never uttered anything better than ‘There is no deity worthy of worship but Allah.’” Sa'd ibn Iyād then said: “Do you know what it is, Abū Abd Allah? By Allah, it is the word of piety to which Allah bound the Companions of Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—and they were most deserving and worthy of it. May Allah be pleased with them”1.

— Another virtue of this declaration is that it is the ultimate and highest expression of truth. Allah Most High says: “On the Day when the Spirit and the angels stand in rows, none will speak except one whom the Most Compassionate permits and who says what is right” 2.

Alī ibn Abī Talha narrated from Ibn Abbās—may Allah be pleased with them both—concerning His saying, “Except one whom the Most Compassionate permits and who says what is right,” that he said: “That is, only one whom the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, permits on account of his testimony that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah. It is the ultimate expression of truth”3.

Ikrima said: “What is right is: ‘There is no deity worthy of worship but Allah’”4.

— Another virtue is that it is the true invocation meant in His saying: “To Him belongs the true invocation. Those whom they invoke besides Him do not answer them in any way. They are like one who stretches out his hands toward water so that it may reach his mouth, though it will never reach it. The invocation of the disbelievers is only in vain” 5.

— Another virtue is that it is the true bond upon which the adherents of Islam are united. On its basis they show loyalty and enmity, and through it they love and hate; and because of it
