28 / The Varying Excellence of the Most Beautiful Names and Mention of the Greatest Name

We have already explained that Allah’s Most Beautiful Names are not confined to any specific number. The Prophet’s statement, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, “Allah has ninety-nine names; whoever enumerates them will enter Paradise,” does not mean that the Most Beautiful Names are limited to this number. At most, it indicates the excellence of these ninety-nine names and that they are distinguished by the fact that whoever enumerates them will enter Paradise.

This demonstrates that the Most Beautiful Names vary in excellence, contrary to those who deny this. Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “The claim that Allah’s attributes do not vary in excellence, and other similar claims, are unsupported by any evidence.... Just as His names and attributes are diverse, they also vary in excellence, as demonstrated by the Book, the Sunnah, consensus, and reason.”1 End quote.

Further evidence that the Most Beautiful Names vary in excellence is the authentically reported statement of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that Allah has a Greatest Name: when He is asked by it, He gives, and when He is invoked by it, He answers. There is no doubt that this is an immense distinction granted specifically to the name described as Allah’s Greatest Name. We shall perhaps review some of the hadiths concerning it and then consider what some scholars have said about identifying it.

Imam Ahmad narrated in the Musnad, as did the compilers of the four Sunan collections, from Anas ibn Mālik, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, heard a man say: “O Allah, I ask You, for all praise belongs to You. There is no deity worthy of worship but You alone, without partner—the Bountiful Bestower, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, the Possessor of Majesty and Honor.” The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then said: “You have indeed asked
