Benefits of Remembrance
Our discussion of the benefits of remembrance continues. We previously mentioned one of its benefits: it protects the one who engages in it from Satan. Whoever is devoid of remembrance will find Satan clinging to him as inseparably as his shadow. Allah says: “Whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Merciful, We appoint for him a devil, who becomes his close companion.” 1 A servant cannot protect himself from Satan except through the remembrance of Allah Most High. This is one of the many tremendous benefits of remembrance.
As previously noted, the eminent Imam Ibn al-Qayyim—may Allah have mercy on him—enumerated more than seventy benefits of remembrance in his valuable work al-Wābil al-Sayyib. We shall now continue with some of those tremendous benefits that he—may Allah have mercy on him—mentioned in the aforementioned book.2
— One of the tremendous benefits of remembering Allah is that it brings joy, gladness, and ease to the heart of the one who remembers Him, and imbues the heart with serenity and tranquility. Allah Most High says: “Those who believe and whose hearts find tranquility in the remembrance of Allah. Surely, it is in the remembrance of Allah that hearts find tranquility.” 3 His words, “whose hearts find tranquility,” mean that whatever anxiety or agitation lies within them disappears and is replaced by solace, joy, and ease. His words, “Surely, it is in the remembrance of Allah that hearts find tranquility,” mean that it is only right and fitting that hearts should find no tranquility
