Imam Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, mentioned great means of attaining love. He said:
“The means of attaining love are ten:
The first is to recite the Quran reflectively, understanding its meanings and what is intended by it.
The second is to draw near to Allah Most High through voluntary acts of worship after fulfilling the obligatory ones.
The third is to remember Him constantly in every circumstance—with one’s tongue, heart, deeds, and spiritual state. One’s share of love will be commensurate with this.
The fourth is to prefer what He loves over what you love when personal desires become overwhelming.
The fifth is for the heart to contemplate His names and attributes, witness them, and roam through the gardens and vast expanses of this knowledge.
The sixth is to behold His kindness, beneficence, and blessings, both manifest and hidden.
The seventh—and the most remarkable of them—is the heart’s utter humility before Him.
The eighth is to withdraw into solitude at the time of the divine descent, recite His Book, and then conclude that with seeking forgiveness and repenting.
The ninth is to sit in the company of sincere lovers and gather the finest fruits of their words. Do not speak unless speaking is clearly more beneficial and you know that it will further your spiritual state and benefit others.
The tenth is to distance yourself from every cause that comes between the heart and Allah, Mighty and Majestic.”
He then said, “Through these ten means, the lovers reached the stations of love.”1
