Perhaps, my Muslim brother, I may mention here one of the benefits of remembrance that he—may Allah have mercy on him—cited, with the intention of presenting some more of these benefits to you, if Allah wills. I also advise you to acquire the aforementioned book and benefit from it, for it is truly a work of immense benefit and value.
One benefit of remembrance is that it drives Satan away, subdues him, and breaks his power1. Allah Most High says: “Whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Merciful, We assign to him a devil who becomes his constant companion.” 2 He also says: “Indeed, when those who fear Allah are touched by a temptation from Satan, they remember, and at once they see clearly.” 3
It is authentically established in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad, the Sunan of al-Tirmidhī, al-Hākim’s Mustadrak, and other works, in the hadith of al-Hārith al-Asharī, that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Allah, Glorified is He, commanded John son of Zechariah to observe five teachings and to command the Children of Israel to observe them. He was on the verge of delaying their proclamation, so Jesus—peace be upon him—said to him: ‘Allah has commanded you to observe five teachings and to command the Children of Israel to observe them. Either you command them, or I shall.’ John replied: ‘If you precede me in proclaiming them, I fear that the earth may swallow me or that I may be punished.’ He therefore gathered the people in Jerusalem. The mosque became full, and they sat upon the raised galleries. He then said: ‘Allah has commanded me to observe five teachings and to command you to observe them…’”4.
