Likewise, anyone who claims prophethood—or believes someone who makes such a claim—after the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has fallen into unbelief, for he is denying the divine statement: “but he is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets” (33:40).
Anyone who rejects the prohibition of illicit sexual intercourse, denies the unlawfulness of any manifestly forbidden matter upon which consensus exists—such as pork or wine—or, conversely, declares unlawful something that is unanimously acknowledged as lawful, like properly slaughtered livestock, has disbelieved.
The same ruling applies to whoever denies the obligatory nature of any of the five pillars mentioned in the Prophet’s words: “Islam is built on five: bearing witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; establishing the prayer; paying the zakat; fasting Ramadan; and pilgrimage to the Sacred House.”
Whoever mocks the religion, shows contempt for the Noble Quran, claims that something is missing from it, or that part of it has been concealed, is—without any dispute—an unbeliever.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728 AH) said: “It is necessarily known from the religion of Islam, and unanimously agreed upon by all Muslims, that whoever deems it permissible to follow a religion other than Islam, or a law other than the law of Muhammad ﷺ, is a disbeliever; his unbelief is like that of the one who believes in part of the Book and rejects part of it.”
He also said: “Whoever ridicules Allah’s promise or His threat, fails to declare disbelievers those who practice a religion other than Islam—such as the Christians—or doubts their unbelief, or approves of their doctrine, is by unanimous agreement himself a disbeliever.”
