Once all the conditions for amputation have been met, the offender’s right hand is severed, following the Qur’anic reading transmitted from Ibn Masʿūd: “then cut off their right hands” (Q 5:38). The cut is made at the wrist joint, for the hand is the instrument used in theft, and the punishment therefore removes that instrument. The amputation is confined to the hand, for when the term “hand” is mentioned without qualification, it is understood to refer to the portion below the wrist. After the procedure the wound is treated with whatever measures will stop the bleeding and promote healing, using the appropriate medical techniques available in every era.
