Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “The Shafiʿis, Hanafis, Malikis, and the later scholars of our own school have maintained that there is no retaliation (qiṣāṣ) for a slap or a single blow, and some of them even alleged consensus on the point. In doing so they abandoned plain analogy, the purport of the scriptural texts, and the consensus of the Companions. Allah the Exalted says, ‘But if you retaliate, then retaliate with the like of that with which you were wronged’ (Q 16:126).
Accordingly, the one who has been slapped is entitled to do to the aggressor exactly what was done to him: a slap for a slap, a blow for a blow, on the same spot, with the very implement used—or with something as close to it as possible—because that is nearer to the equivalence required both by reason and by Sacred Law than imposing a discretionary penalty of a different kind or quality from the original assault. Such was the practice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his successors; it is the pure dictate of analogy, and it is affirmed by the explicit statements of Aḥmad.” End of Ibn al-Qayyim’s words.
