al-Moulakhas al-FiqhiSalih Al-Fawzan

With regard to religion, the child follows whichever of his two parents possesses the sounder faith. Thus, if a Christian marries a pagan woman—or the reverse—the child is deemed to be upon the Christian’s religion. In questions of freedom and bondage, however, the child follows his mother, unless a specific stipulation or an element of uncertainty alters that ruling.

From this brief survey of the rules governing lineage, one may see how earnestly Islam strives to safeguard genealogies, because of the many benefits that arise from doing so—maintaining kinship ties, regulating inheritance, establishing guardianship, and other social interests. Allah, Exalted is He, says: “O mankind, We created you from a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes so that you might come to know one another. Surely the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is the most God-fearing. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware” (Qur’an 49:13). The aim of learning one’s lineage, therefore, is not boastfulness or pre-Islamic tribal zeal, but rather cooperation, connection, and mutual compassion.

May Allah grant everyone success in what He loves and approves.
