What is incumbent upon a woman with chronic bleeding once she is deemed ritually pure:
-
She must perform a full bath (ghusl) at the end of the menstrual period that applies to her, as detailed earlier.
-
For every prayer she should wash her private area to remove any external blood, insert a piece of cotton or the like into the opening to block the flow, secure it with something that will keep it from slipping, and then perform wuḍūʾ when each prayer time begins.
The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said about the woman with istiḥāḍa: “She should refrain from prayer during the days of her usual bleeding, then bathe and perform wuḍūʾ for every prayer.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah, and al-Tirmidhī, who classified it as ḥasan. He—peace and blessings be upon him—also said: “I recommend cotton; plug the place with it.” The word “cotton” refers to a pad, and today one may use modern sanitary products that serve the same purpose.
