No sinful activity may take place at the walīmah, such as serving wine, playing songs with flutes and pipes, or hiring professional singers and musicians—practices that, regrettably, are found at some banquets today.
When these conditions are met, attending becomes obligatory, for the Prophet ﷺ said, “The worst food is the food of a wedding feast: those who would come are kept away from it, while those who would refuse are invited. Whoever fails to attend has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger,” reported by Muslim.
It is recommended to publicize the marriage—that is, to make it known and widely announced—because the Prophet ﷺ said, “Announce the marriage,” and in another wording, “Make the marriage public,” narrated by Ibn Mājah.
It is also recommended to beat the daf on such occasions, for the Prophet ﷺ said, “The marker that sets the lawful apart from the unlawful is the sound of the voice and the daf at a wedding,” narrated by al-Nasāʾī, Aḥmad, and al-Tirmidhī, who graded it sound.
