Chapter on Women Prohibited in Marriage
Women forbidden in marriage fall into two categories.
Category One: those who are perpetually forbidden.
They number fourteen in all—seven are prohibited on account of blood-relations and seven on account of other causes. They are the women named in the two verses that begin, “Do not marry… .”
First: the women permanently forbidden by blood-relation, listed as follows:
• The mother and grandmother, by the verse: “Your mothers are forbidden to you.”
• The daughter, granddaughter through a son, granddaughter through a daughter, and great-granddaughter through a son, by the verse: “and your daughters.”
• The sister—whether full, paternal, or maternal—by the verse: “and your sisters.”
• The sister’s daughter, her son’s daughter, and her daughter’s daughter, by the verse: “and the daughters of your sister.”
