Chapter on the Marriage Contract: its Pillars and Conditions
When a marriage contract is about to be concluded, it is recommended to precede it with a sermon known as the Sermon of Ibn Masʿūd. The groom himself or any other attendee may deliver it, and its wording is:
“Indeed, all praise is for Allah; we praise Him, seek His help, ask His forgiveness, and repent to Him. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil within ourselves and from the misdeeds of our actions. Whomever Allah guides, none can mislead, and whomever He allows to stray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.”
This hadith is narrated by the Five and graded sound by al-Tirmidhi.
After this sermon, three verses from the Book of Allah are recited:
-
Allah the Exalted says: “O you who believe, be mindful of Allah with the mindfulness due to Him, and do not die except as Muslims.” ⦗Qur’an 3:102⦘
-
And He says: “O mankind, be mindful of your Lord who created you from a single soul and from it created its mate, and from the two spread many men and women. Be mindful of Allah, in whose name you appeal to one another, and of the ties of kinship. Surely Allah is ever watchful over you.” ⦗Qur’an 4:1⦘
