It is unlawful for a Muslim to marry while he is living in the land of belligerent unbelievers, for such a marriage exposes his children to danger and to possible domination by the disbelievers, and he cannot be certain that his wife will be safe from them.

It is recommended to marry a woman who is devout, chaste, and from a good family. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet said: “A woman is married for four reasons: for her wealth, her lineage, her beauty, and her religion. Seek the one who is religious—may your hands be covered with dust.” Agreed upon.

The texts discourage marrying a woman solely for reasons other than her piety. The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Do not marry women for their beauty, for beauty may lead them to ruin; nor for their wealth, for wealth may cause them to transgress. Marry them for their religion.”

The Prophet also encouraged choosing a virgin. He said to Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), “Why did you not marry a virgin, so that you could amuse yourself with her and she with you?” Agreed upon.

Marrying a virgin fosters complete affection, for she has not previously been bound to a husband to whom her heart might still be attached; thus her need for her new husband will be whole.
