the urine of a young girl is treated exactly like that of an adult woman, and in all these situations it must be washed in the same manner as any other impurity.
Impurities are divided into three categories:
- A severe impurity: that of a dog or anything similar.
- A light impurity: the urine of a young boy who has not yet started eating solid food.
- An intermediate impurity: all other kinds of filth.
It is therefore necessary to know which animal droppings and urine are pure and which are impure. Whatever animal may lawfully be eaten, its urine and dung are pure—such as camels, cattle, sheep, and the like—because the Prophet ﷺ ordered the people of ʿUraina to join the charity camels and drink their urine and milk (agreed upon). This indicates the purity of the camels’ urine, for that which is impure cannot be lawfully used as medicine or drunk. If someone argues that it was permitted only out of dire necessity, we reply that the Prophet ﷺ did not instruct them to wash away its traces when they wished to pray. Moreover, in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī it is related that the Prophet ﷺ used to pray in sheepfolds and even commanded prayer there, although the animals certainly urinate in those enclosures.
