over the khuffs.
Al-Nawawī said, “So many Companions transmitted the practice of wiping over the khuffs that they cannot be counted.”
Imām Aḥmad declared, “I have no doubt whatsoever about wiping; there are forty hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ on the subject.”
Ibn al-Mubārak and others noted, “Among the Companions there is no disagreement about wiping over the khuffs; it is permissible.”
Ibn al-Mundhir and others transmitted the consensus of the scholars on its permissibility, and the people of the Sunnah and the community are unanimously agreed, unlike the innovators who reject it.
The ruling on wiping over the khuffs is that it is a concession (rukhṣa); acting on the concession is better than removing the khuffs and washing the feet, for it is taking advantage of Allah’s facilitation. The Prophet ﷺ never went out of his way to do the opposite of his present state: if his feet were in khuffs he would wipe over them, and if they were uncovered he would wash them. Therefore, it is not prescribed to put on khuffs merely for the sake of wiping over them.
