He ﷺ also informed us that some members of his community would overstep the bounds in purification, and he said, “A devil assigned to ablution is called al-Walahān, so beware of the whisperings about water.”
Squandering water while pouring it serves no benefit and brings additional harms:
-
A person may count on the sheer volume of water and fail to ensure that it reaches every part of the limbs; a spot may remain dry without his noticing, leaving the ablution incomplete and his prayer performed without valid purity.
-
There is the danger of falling into excess in worship, for ablution is an act of worship, and when excess enters an act of worship it becomes spoiled.
-
Extravagant pouring can breed obsessive misgivings about purification.
All goodness lies in following the Messenger ﷺ, whereas the worst matters are the newly-invented ones. May Allah grant everyone success in what He loves and approves.
Therefore, O Muslim, make sure that your ablution and all your acts of worship are carried out in the lawful, balanced way—neither excessive nor negligent; both extremes are blameworthy, and the best course is the middle one.
