Chapter on the rulings of Hajj observed during the Days of Tashrīq and the Farewell ṭawāf
After completing the ṭawāf al-ifāḍah on the Day of Sacrifice, the pilgrim must return to Mina and spend the night there. This overnight stay is obligatory, as evidenced by the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿAbbās: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not grant anyone permission to spend the night in Mecca except al-ʿAbbās, because he was in charge of providing water to the pilgrims.” Reported by Ibn Mājah.
If the pilgrim does not hasten his departure, he remains in Mina for three nights; should he choose the concession to hasten, he spends only two nights—the night of the 11th and the night of the 12th (of Dhū al-Ḥijjah).
While in Mina he performs all the prescribed prayers shortened but not combined, each prayer being offered in its own time.
Each day of the Days of Tashrīq he stones the three jamarāt only after the sun has passed its zenith, following the ḥadīth of Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him): “On the Day of Sacrifice the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cast the stones in the morning, but on the following days he did so after the sun had declined.” Narrated by all the major ḥadīth compilers.
