He then descends from Ṣafā and heads toward Marwah, thereby commencing the first lap. Between the two green markers he quickens his pace, while outside that stretch he walks at his normal speed, until he reaches Marwah. There he climbs upon it, repeats the words he uttered on Ṣafā, and thus finishes the first lap. Next he comes down from Marwah and returns toward Ṣafā, thereby starting the second lap—walking where walking is prescribed and hurrying where hurrying is prescribed… and so on until he has completed seven laps in all, beginning at Ṣafā and ending at Marwah. The journey from Ṣafā to Marwah counts as one lap, and the return from Marwah to Ṣafā counts as another.
It is recommended throughout the saʿy to engage in supplication, remembrance of Allah, or recitation of the Quran.
There is no set litany for either tawaf or saʿy; one may pray with whatever supplications come readily to mind.
For the saʿy to be valid three conditions must be met: the intention, traversing the full distance between Ṣafā and Marwah, and having performed tawaf beforehand.
