Chapter on the rites of the Day of Tarwiyah and the Day of ʿArafah
The forms of pilgrimage with which a traveller enters ihram on reaching the miqat are three:
-
Ifrad: to intend ihram for Hajj alone, remaining in that state until he has stoned the Jamrah on the Day of Sacrifice, shaved his head, performed Tawaf al-Ifadah, and walked between Safa and Marwah if he did not perform the saʿy after the Tawaf of Arrival.
-
Qiran: to intend ihram for ʿumrah and Hajj together at the miqat. His rites are the same as those of the mufrid, save that he must offer the sacrificial animal required of those who perform tamattuʿ.
-
Tamattuʿ: to enter ihram for ʿumrah at the miqat, then—once in Mecca—complete its rites of tawaf, saʿy, and shaving or trimming the hair, come out of ihram, and remain in a state of release until assuming ihram for Hajj.
The most meritorious of these forms is tamattuʿ. Accordingly, it is recommended for anyone who has entered ihram as a mufrid or qarin and has not brought a sacrificial animal to change his intention to tamattuʿ and perform the rites of a mutamattiʿ.
It is likewise recommended for the mutamattiʿ, for the mufrid or qarin who has converted to tamattuʿ and released himself from ihram after his ʿumrah, and for everyone else residing in Mecca or its environs in a state of release, to enter ihram for Hajj on the Day of Tarwiyah—the eighth of Dhu al-Hijjah. For Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said, describing the Prophet’s ﷺ pilgrimage: “All the people came out of ihram and shortened their hair, except the Prophet ﷺ and those who had sacrificial animals with them…”
