Chapter: The conditions that make ḥajj obligatory for a woman and the rules governing deputation
Pilgrimage is incumbent upon every Muslim, male and female alike. For a woman, however, one additional condition must be met beyond those already mentioned: she must have a maḥram who accompanies her on the journey, for it is unlawful for her to travel—whether for ḥajj or for any other purpose—without such a guardian.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “A woman must not travel unless a maḥram is with her, and no man may enter upon her unless she has a maḥram present.” Reported by Aḥmad with a sound chain.
A man once said to the Prophet ﷺ, “I wish to join such-and-such an army expedition, but my wife wants to perform ḥajj.” He replied, “Go out with her.”
In the two Ṣaḥīḥs it is related: A man said, “My wife has set out to perform ḥajj while I have enlisted in such-and-such a campaign.” He said, “Go, and perform ḥajj with your wife.”
