Chapter on the Acts that Nullify the Fast
A Muslim must be aware of the matters that invalidate the fast so that he can keep clear of them, for they break the fast and render it void. The chief invalidators are:
-
Sexual intercourse. Whenever a fasting person engages in intercourse, his fast is broken. He must make up that day and, in addition, offer an expiation (kaffārah): freeing a slave. If he cannot find a slave or afford its price, he must fast two consecutive months; and if he is unable to fast two consecutive months for a legitimate excuse, he must feed sixty needy persons, giving each person half a sāʿ of the staple food customary in his country.
-
Ejaculation brought about by kissing, touching, masturbation, or repeated looking. Should any of these lead to the emission of semen, the fast is invalidated and the person must make up only that day; no expiation is required, for expiation pertains exclusively to intercourse.
As for someone who experiences a wet dream while asleep, nothing is incumbent upon him and his fast remains sound, since it occurred involuntarily; however, he must perform the ritual bath (ghusl) to remove the state of janābah (major ritual impurity).
