Chapter on the Rulings of Ablution

Allah the Exalted says, “O you who believe, when you rise to perform the prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe over your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles” (Qur’an 5:6). This noble verse makes ablution obligatory for prayer, specifies the limbs that must be washed or wiped, and defines the limits of each. The Prophet ﷺ then explained the procedure of ablution in words that leave no room for ambiguity.

The conditions are eight:

  1. Islam,
  2. sound intellect,
  3. discernment,
  4. intention—hence ablution is not valid
