What men are permitted to wear of gold and silver:
A man is allowed to wear a ring made of silver, for the Prophet ﷺ wore a ring of silver; this is agreed upon.
However, it is forbidden for him to wear a ring of gold, because the Prophet ﷺ prohibited men from adorning themselves with gold, sternly rebuked those who did so, and said: “Does one of you deliberately take a glowing coal from Hell and place it in his hand?”
A man may also use gold when necessity calls for it, such as a nose implant or a tooth brace. ʿArfajah ibn Saʿd had his nose severed on the Day of al-Kilāb; he first fashioned a nose from silver, but it gave off an odor, so the Prophet ﷺ instructed him to make a nose of gold. This was narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Hākim, who deemed it sound.
What women are permitted to adorn themselves with of gold and silver:
Women may wear whatever items of gold and silver are customary for them, for the Lawgiver has granted them unrestricted permission to adorn themselves. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Gold and silk have been made lawful for the females of my community and forbidden for its males,” narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and al-Tirmidhi.
