Thus, the obligation of zakat was linked to produce that is measured by volume, which in turn indicates that no zakat is due on crops that are neither measured in this way nor stored. The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—and his successors deliberately refrained from collecting zakat on such crops even though they were cultivated right beside them, and no zakat was taken from them; this is clear evidence that zakat is not obligatory on them. Consequently, leaving these crops free of zakat is the Sunnah that is to be followed.

Imam Ahmad said, “Items like cucumbers, snake cucumbers, onions, and aromatic herbs are not subject to zakat—unless they are sold, and a full lunar year passes over the sale price.”
