“The sanctioned visit,” he continues, “is one whose purpose is to greet the deceased and pray for him—just as one prays over him at the funeral—without undertaking a journey for that purpose. The innovated visit is when the visitor asks the dead to meet his needs; that is major polytheism. Or he may intend to make supplication at the grave or to supplicate through the dead—this is a reprehensible innovation and a pathway to polytheism. It has no basis in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, nor was it ever approved by the early generations of this ummah or by its leading scholars.” End quote.
