The Prophet ﷺ also said, “Allah does not accept any prayer without purification,” as related by Muslim and others; and in another wording, “Allah does not accept the prayer of one who has become impure until he performs ablution.” Accordingly, it is impermissible for such a person to pray without purification when he is able to obtain it, and his prayer is invalid whether he is unaware or aware, forgetful or deliberate. However, if he knowingly and intentionally prays without purification he is sinful and liable to disciplinary action, whereas the ignorant or the forgetful incur no sin—yet the prayer remains invalid.
- It is likewise forbidden for someone in a state of impurity to perform ṭawāf (circumambulation) around the Ancient House, for the Prophet ﷺ said, “Circumambulation of the House is prayer, except that speech has been permitted during it.” The Prophet ﷺ himself performed ablution for ṭawāf, and it is authentically reported that he forbade a menstruating woman from doing ṭawāf until she became pure. All of this demonstrates that ṭawāf is unlawful for anyone in a state of impurity until he purifies himself.
