Chapter: The Rulings on Vessels and the Garments of Non-Muslims
A “vessel” is any container used to store water or other substances, whether it is made of iron, wood, leather, or any other material.
The basic rule regarding vessels is permissibility: every ritually pure container may be owned and used, except for two categories, namely:
- Any vessel made of gold or silver, or any vessel that contains gold or silver—whether plated, gilded, inlaid, or treated in any similar way—apart from a small silver clamp inserted when necessary to repair the vessel.
The proof for the prohibition of vessels made of gold and silver is the Prophet’s ﷺ saying: “Do not drink from vessels of gold or silver, and do not eat from dishes made of them; for they are theirs in this world and ours in the Hereafter.” This ḥadīth is related by all of the major compilers.
